Tanzania’s Top 5 Must-See Safari Destinations

When it comes to choosing a prime location for an African safari, there’s no better choice than Tanzania.

Here’s our Top 5 Tanzania Safari Must-See’s covering the best range of locations, animals, scenery and safari adventures.

 Serengeti National Park

One of the world’s most famous safari parks, Serengeti National Park has been referenced in documentaries, films and music. It’s no surprise because the Serengeti is home to one of Africa’s greatest wildlife shows; the Great Migration.  Over 1.5 million wildebeest, gazelles and zebras traverse a staggering 994 miles  around the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area in search of the next meal. Aside from this incredible Bucket-List must-see, the Serengeti has an abundance of reasons to visit; diverse scenery from bushy swamps and flourishing grassland to rocky terrain and rolling hills and plenty of wild African animals.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Crater is an inactive volcanic caldera supporting an extraordinary number of animals. This natural amphitheatre is an African Eden for wildlife and one of the most unique and exciting safari opportunities in Tanzania. Look out for black rhino as seen in this photo.Wildebeest, zebras and antelopes start their migration from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area towards greener grasslands from about December to March and travel in a circular route around the Serengeti. Look out for the famed black-maned lions of Ngorongoro.

Kilimanjaro National Park

Set at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro National Park is one of Tanzania’s most stunning reserves. Discover elephant, buffalo and antelope to name a few of the animals living here. Kilimanjaro is one of the easiest mountains to climb, despite its height at 5,895 metres and the ascent isn’t steep or treacherous. Amateurs can tackle it with minimal equipment but there are experienced guides to lead the way and carry your packs. Be sure to enquire about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and test your resolve to do something you’ve never done before!

Selous Game Reserve

Selous Game Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a reason – it’s the largest uninhabited protected game area in Africa spanning 50,000km2. Selous gives you a taste of totally wild unspoiled Africa with the chance to be amongst what’s said to be the largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania. This sanctuary is a must-visit for any safari lover who wants a taste of real bush adventure where the unexpected may just happen to you.

Tarangire National Park

Situated around the Tarangire River, the Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s best kept secret on the northern safari circuit. It’s river creates a dry season refuge for many migratory animals (elephants, wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, eland and buffalo). Iconic baobab trees and tree-climbing lions make Tarangire National Park very Instagram worthy. Whether you walk or drive through the park, get to the riverbank during the hotter months and you’ll be sure to see animals at the water.
